Evidence for kinematic variation with ionization level in quasars

  • 1. California Univ., Santa Cruz

Description

New observations of broad linewidths for CIV 1548 and MgII 2800 in quasars are combined with previously published widths. CIV 1548 is systematically broader. The kinematics and geometry of the broad line-emitting gas evidently depend on the ionization level. A single photoionized cloud is therefore a poor approximation to typical conditions in the line-emitting gas. These results also suggest that the acceleration mechanism is less efficient for more optically thick gas clouds. 28 references
