Description
In SU(N) gauge theory on the manifold S1xR1 (circle x time) the non-integrable phases of the Wilson line integrals are the only physical gauge field degrees of freedom. The dynamics of such phases are completely solved in pure gauge field theory in the Coulomb gauge. It is also shown that the presence of fermions drastically alters the structure of the vacuum.
