Determination of trace elements in plants by the X-ray fluorescence analysis for environmental pollution investigations

Description
An energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence method for the measurement of pollutants in plant material is described. The measuring system consists of a Si(Li) detector, 109Cd and 55Fe annular sources and a multichannel analyser with a built-in minicomputer. The methods of calibration and standard preparation are discussed. Plant material has been analysed either as dried and pressed pellets or as ash after combustion of the sample. The results of the analysis of moss samples are reported. Sulphur contents of beech leaves and pine tree needles were determined by using the internal standard method. The XRF method proved to be useful and sensitive enough to measure pollution of plant material. (author)
