Description
The ratios of multiple matrix elements Msub(n)/Msub(p) for the 0+ -> 21+ transitions in doubly magic nuclei 48Ca and 208Pb are compared. For 48Ca the large value of Msub(n)/Msub(p) approx.= 2.6 is contrasted with a ratio < N/Z for 208Pb. These results, obtained by comparing hadron scattering and electromagnetic transition rates, are explained by the shell structure and are corroborated by RPA calculations. (orig.)
