Solvent Extraction and Separation of Chromium(III) and (V I) in Aqueous Solutions with Trioctylphosphine Oxide

  • 1. Department of Chemistry, Science University of Tokyo 1-3 Kagurazaka, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo (Japan)

Description

The solvent extraction of chromium(III) and (V I) in aqueous solutions with a solvating type extractant, trioctylphosphine oxide(TOPO), in hexane is studied. Kinetically inert Cr3+ is extracted from 1 mol dm-3 sodium perchlorate solution very quickly and quantitatively as Cr(H2 O · TOPO) 63+(CIO4-)3. Chromium(V I) in hydrochloric acid is extracted effectively as the H2CrO$(H CI)n centre dot TOPOm species ( m = 2 or 3, n = 0 to 2) and the distribution ratio increased by an increase in the acid concentration. From these, a procedure is proposed for the extraction of both chromium(V I) and chromium(III) in aqueous solution separately with 0.1 mol dm-3 TOPO in hexane
