Control of tritium transfer at TFTR

  • 1. Princeton Plasma Physics Lab., NJ (United States)

Description

Tritium gas used for experiments at Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) is stored in the Tritium Supply and Delivery System (TSDS) vault. Upon a request authorized by the TFTR Shift Supervisor (TFTRSS) the tritium is transferred from TSDS to TFTR for daily operations. The Tritium Hardware Interlock System (THICS) is a computer based system of interlocks and controls which enables the TFTRSS to conduct safe tritium transfer operations. The THICS control system monitors and displays status of all safety related inputs and determines if the tritium transfers are to be permitted. Alarms are generated and logged if any interlock is not in a safe state. Computer CRT pages are available to display system status and operator commands. The amounts of tritium transferred between the TSDS and TFTR are reported in Curies and torr-liters. Hard copies of those reports are also available. The THICS control system is a part of the Tritium Controls and Monitoring System (TRECAMS). The TRECAMS is a distributed control and monitoring system, equipped with control processors, I/O racks, CRT consoles, and data loggers. The system components are linked via the high speed data network. The system is used to interface the tritium process at TFTR. This paper describes the details of the THICS and TRECAMS systems
