Density inversion in a red giant envelope

Description

The phenomenon of density inversion in the recombination zone is discussed through detailed analysis of a particular envelope of a red giant star. It is found that the completion of the hydrogen causes a drop in the efficiency of energy transfer by convection. This drop raises the need for a steep temperature gradient, which requires an opposite density gradient to balance the hydrostatic equation. (author)
