Recent results on single particle distributions
Description
Important recent results in the field of single particle distributions are discussed. These are summarized as: (a) The two-component picture of fragmentation and central 'pionisation' seems to describe the bulk of hadron collisions. (b) Even at the highest ISR energies there is no experimental evidence for scaling in the central region. (c) The hypothesis of limiting fragmentation seems to hold within 10 to 20% accuracy. (d) The triple Regge analysis can be applied to the study of inclusive Λ and Δ++ production even at low energies. (e) The inclusive study of meson resonances indicates that they; (i) have large total cross sections, (ii) account, independently of energy, for a large fraction of final state pions and kaons, (iii) show similar momentum distributions to pions and kaons. (f) Copious resonance production may explain to a large extent correlations effects observed in the two particle distributions. Furthermore, the study of baryon and meson resonances has the merit of probing the spin structure of the final state particles by allowing the determination of inclusive density matrix elements and polarization. Such information could allow quantitative tests of various models. (U.K.)
