Rate of γ-phase growth in iron

  • 1. Tsentral'nyj Nauchno-Issledovatel'skij Inst. Chernoj Metallurgii, Moscow (USSR). Inst. Metallovedeniya i Fiziki Metallov

Description

Investigated was the kinetics of α → γ transformation in iron samples, melted in vacuum (10-6% C) and in open induction furnace (0.017% C). The rate of γ-phase growth was measured by the method combining electron microscopy and cinemicrography. It was established, that the temperature range of α → γ transformation in iron with 0.017% C was approximately equal to 40 deg and doubled the interval of pure iron transformation. The displacement of growing γ phase boundaries in pure iron appeared to be continuous, thus testifying to the lack of crystal-structure correspondence during α → γ transformation. The obtained values of transformation rates are in a good agreement with those calculated from the Kan formula
