Isotope dilution-thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID-TIMS) for determination of trace constituent uranium in zircaloy

  • 1. Fuel Chemistry Div., Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

Zircaloy is an important nuclear material in view of its use in pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs). The presence of trace amounts of uranium in zircaloy can lead to increased gamma activity due to the gaseous fission products produced from the fission of uranium (U) present in zircaloy. Hence, there is a stringent specification limit for uranium in zircaloy. Therefore, isotope dilution is the most appropriate method in this case as it is free from matrix effects
