Austenite grain size control of a hot working tool steel by addition of niobium

Description

The substitution of vanadium by niobium for controlling the austenite grain size of a hot working tool steel was studied, using the addition of the same atomic percentage as a criterion. The austenitising temperatures ranged from 850 to 1.2000C. At low austenitising temperature, both vanadium and niobium are effective in producing small grain size. At high austenitising temperatures, niobium was more effective than vanadium. Possible causes of this difference and the occurrence of coarse niobium carbide in the niobium steel are discussed on the basis of the difference in solubility between niobium and vanadium carbides

Abstract (Portuguese)

Foi estudada a substituicao do vanadio por niobio no refino de grao austenitico de um aco para trabalho a quente utilizando-se como criterio a adicao de mesma porcentagem atomica. As temperaturas de austenitizacao utilizadas varreram a faixa de 850 a 1.2000C. Para baixas temperaturas de austenitizacao, tanto o vanadio como o niobio sao eficientes na obtencao de pequeno tamanho de grao austenitico. Em altas temperaturas de austenitizacao o niobio mostrou ser mais efetivo do que o vanadio. As possiveis causas desta diferenca e a ocorrencia de excesso de carboneto de niobio, grosseiro, no aco com niobio, sao discutidas com base na diferenca de solubilidade entre os carbonetos de niobio e de vanadio
