Sorption of radionuclides on natural materials

  • 1. Vyskumny Ustav Jadrovych Elektrarni, Jaslovske Bohunice (Czechoslovakia)

Description

For conditioning liquid radioactive wastes in Czechoslovakia clinoptilolite tuffit, mordenite tuff, tobermorite and fly ash are used in addition to cement. The sorption study of the principal radionuclides contained by liquid radioactive wastes such as 6OCo, 134Cs and 137Cs was carried out on these natural materials. The pH of liquid radioactive wastes was 12.5-13.7 and salt content cca. 200 gxdm-3. The results of sorption are given by distribution coefficients. The best results were obtained by mordenite tuff for cesium and tobermorite for cobalt; the worst ones by fly ash for both. (author)
