Sodium reconstruction on surface of silicate glasses in transmission electron microscope

Description
We find that irradiated Na ions in silicate glasses undergo reconstruction on the surfaces before being repelled from the irradiated area by electron excitations. These results are based on evidence from time-dependent electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The process of reconstruction involves an irreversible change of the Na+→Na0→Na+, in which the initial and final Na+ ions have different bonding environments.
