Description
Surface photometry is presented in five wavebands (UBVRI) of two southern active elliptical galaxies, NGC 1316 and 1052, obtained with the recently commissioned RGO CCD camera on the AAT. The speed of the CCD camera enables multiband exposures to be taken in quick succession, enhancing stability of the conditions. The linearity and stability of the CCD are demonstrated and the surface photometry is shown to be accurate over a wide dynamic range. The morphology of the dust lane in NGC 1316, and the nature of the very red core and a diffuse dust lane in NGC 1052 are discussed. (author)
