High level liquid waste vitrification technology

  • 1. Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co. Ltd., Tokyo (Japan)

Description

Vitrification technology of high level liquid waste from reprocessing plants has been developed, and several vitrification plants are now operating based on the metal melter technology and ceramic melter technology worldwide. Vitrification technology developed in Japan by the Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corp. (PNC) has been used in the Tokai Vitrification Facility. IHI participated in the PNC R and D project and construction of the plant, and performed its own R and D on vitrification technology. Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited is now constructing a commercial reprocessing plant at Rokkasho in Aomori Prefecture. IHI is now designing the Rokkasho Vitrification plant as the constructor based on the PNC technology. (author)
