An optical window for metal cryostats

Description
A method of construction of optical windows for conventional metallic helium cryostats is described. Even after several cooling cycles (N > 15) down to the lambda-point of liquid helium, relatively large windows (phi = 50 mm) were free of leakage. Beyond it, the windows were nearly free of strain-induced birefringence. (U.K.)
