Phenix - France's fast breeder reactor

A general description is given of the Phenix reactor. The principal dimensions and operating parameters are quoted. The primary system is briefly described as are the fuel elements and the refuelling procedures. The operational experience is summarised and some incidents, including a sodium leakage in a heat exchanger are briefly discussed. The management of wastes is described briefly. The radiation levels and precautions to limit these are also discussed. In this connection the radiation hygiene aspects of the repair of the leaking heat exchanger are presented. (JIW)
