Fish friendly designs
Description
A new fish-friendly facility at the McNary dam on the Columbia river is described. Originally the fish were provided for by a conventional fishladder, a vertical fishlock, a holding pond and an auxiliary water supply. The system was poor and resulted in the loss of 90% of smolts swimming downstream through the auxiliary water supply system. The problems were alleviated by Harza Engineering of Illinois and Atkinson Construction of California: the new system is described. (UK)
