Evidence for ion-molecular chemistry in the envelope of IRC +10216

Description

Results of aperture synthesis mapping of line emission from the molecules HNC, C2H, and HC3N in the envelope of the carbon star IRC +10216 are presented. The observations of the molecules clearly show the shell-like structure predicted by model calculations. It is argued that the results constitute strong evidence for the importance of ion-molecule reactions and photochemical processes in the circumstellar envelope of IRC +10216. 24 references
