Description

NMR imaging (MR tomography) allows the non-invasive diagnostic evaluation of cartilage, ligaments, tendons and muscles of the limbs, joints and the vertebral spine. The images are characterized by a good spatial resolution, and in contrast to the X-ray CT, sectional images can be done in all planes, as well as three-dimensional image reconstructions. The book reviews the current state of the art and foreseeable developments of NMR imaging of the supporting and connective tissue, also discussing the application of paramagnetic contrast media, and the novel NMR spectroscopy as a method pointing into the future. All contributions discussing the clinical aspects have been written jointly by experts in orthopedics and radiology. (orig.) With 153 figs., 8 tabs

Abstract (German)

Die Magnetresonanztomographie (Kernspintomographie) der Extremitaeten, der Gelenke und der Wirbelsaeule erlaubt die nichtinvasive Darstellung von Knorpel, Baendern, Sehnen und Muskeln in guter raeumlicher Aufloesung. Im Gegensatz zur Roentgencomputertomographie koennen Schnittbilder in allen Ebenen angefertigt und auch dreidimensional rekonstruiert werden. Der gegenwaertige Stand und die absehbaren Entwicklungstendenzen der MR-Tomographie des Stuetz- und Bindegewebes sind in verstaendlicher Form zusammengestellt. Der Einsatz paramagnetischer Kontrastmittel und das in die Zukunft weisende Gebiet der MR-Spektroskopie wurden beruecksichtigt. Alle klinisch orientierten Beitraege wurden von einem Orthopaeden und einem Radiologen gemeinsam verfasst. (orig.) With 153 figs., 8 tabs
