Description

The US Presentation on Global Partnership Work by Joyce Connery from the US DOE described a wide range of the US-supported programmes to enhance nuclear security and safety in Russia. These included dismantlement of strategic nuclear submarines and protection of nuclear materials radioactive sources. One of such efforts was conducted under the Arctic Military Environmental Cooperation (AMEC) involving the combined efforts of the military of Russia, Norway, USA and UK. Due to AMEC, the serial production of transport and storage casks for submarine SNF had started. An interim storage pad for such casks had been built at Atomflot, a nuclear fuel hub in North-West Russia, to speed up removal of SNF from the region. Facilities for RW management, including a mobile facility for liquid RW treatment had been completed. An automated radiation monitoring system had been installed at Atomflot. Projects were underway to enhance safe storage and transportation of decommissioned nuclear submarines.
