The gastrointestinal tract

Since the last revision of this text, the diagnosis of GI tract malformations has been extended back to fetal life by means of ultrasound (US). Virtually every issue of one of the several US journals describes another entity diagnosed before birth. At the same time, sonography and nuclear imaging have been widely applied to hepatobiliary disorders in the newborn, especially in the jaundiced infant. The shall note these methods and provide meaningful images where appropriate, realizing that his is not a treatise on those methods and that the new procedures do not replace older plain-film and barium studies. Some iatrogenic diseases are noted where they pertain to the material under discussion
