Choosing the factorization/renormalization scale in perturbative QCD calculations

Description

It is important in perturbative QCD calculations to estimate the errors due to uncalculated higher order corrections. An inappropriate choice of the renormalization and factorization scales can lead to unnecessarily large higher order corrections. A method for systematically investigating these issues is suggested. it involves examining the integrands of Feynman graphs as a function of κperpendicular. A rationale for choosing a sensible range of the scale parameter(s) is suggested. A by product is a physical interpretation of the scales in the MS and MS schemes. 8 refs., 5 figs
