The scientific advisory board of the Federal Medical Society (Bundesaerztekammer) announces: comment on the subject 'endangerment by nuclear power plants'

The committee 'Endangerment by nuclear power plants' of the working group 'Environmental Medicine' of the Federal Medical Society (Bundesaerztekammer) expresses its opinion on the risk of nuclear power plants to the population in the memorandum. The committee confirms that by keeping to the safety specifications, established until now, one can reckon with a radiation exposure averaging on 1/100th of the natural radiation exposure. Regarding the question of the thermal load, this proves to be no special problem of nuclear engineering. In the case of accidents, it is shown that the safety precautions are such as to exclude the endangering of persons in the environment of nuclear power stations. The probability of so-called hypothetical accidents endangering the population is several orders of magnitude smaller than that of earthquakes or other natural catastrophes. (ORU/LH)

Der Ausschuss 'Gefaehrdung durch Kernkraftwerke' des Arbeitskreises 'Umweltmedizin' der Bundesaerztekammer gibt in der Denkschrift seine Stellungnahme zum Risiko durch Kernkraftwerke fuer die Bevoelkerung. Der Ausschuss stellt fest, dass bei Einhalten der bisherigen Sicherheitsvorschriften mit einer Strahlenbelastung von im Durchschnitt 1/100 der natuerlichen Strahlenbelastung zu rechnen ist. Zur Frage der thermischen Belastung wird festgestellt, dass sie kein spezifisches Problem der Kerntechnik ist. Fuer den Fall von Stoerfaellen muss festgestellt werden, dass die Sicherheitsvorkehrungen dergestalt sind, dass eine Gefaehrdung von Personen in der Umgebung von Kernkraftwerken ausgeschlossen ist. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit sogenannter hypothetischer Stoerfaelle mit Gefaehrdung der Bevoelkerung ist um mehrere Groessenordnungen geringer als die von Erdbeben oder anderen Naturkatastrophen.
