Sediment retrieval and prevention of future their accumulation in the liquid waste tanks at Ignalina NPP

  • 1. Lithuanian Energy Institute, Kaunas (Lithuania)

Description

The objectives of project described is to remove the radioactive sediment from five large tanks at Ignalina NPP, to clean the interior of these tanks to allow manned entry, and to reduce significantly the introduction of suspended radioactive particles to the tanks in the Low Salted Water Cleaning System. The general approach for carrying out this project is to agitate the liquid contents of the tanks sufficiently to suspend the sediment, which can then be pumped out as slurry through permanent piping, and to install modern hydro cyclones to prevent future accumulation of sediments in the downstream tanks.
