Production of heavy water in France

Description

Since 1958, studies relating to heavy water production have covered several processes. Each one has been examined to a greater or lesser degree and attention has finally been concentrated on the isotopic exchanges between hydrogen sulphide and water and between ammonia and synthesis gas, the pilot experiment having shown that hydrogen distillation, although technologically satisfactory, was not competitive. NH3 synthesis gas exchange process; 1) Research was continued and led to the decision to build a production unit, devoted also to the synthesis of ammonia. The process essentially depends on the source of the synthesis gas; the use of a H2O/H2 exchange, which could make it independent, has in fact been rejected for economic reasons. Amongst the various possible designs for the process, the one temperature system was chosen, in spite of certain technological problems, because of it provides: a high enrichment with a reduced number of contact devices. These have now been perfected after large-scale pilot tests. The original industrial experiment to be set in operation will supply useful information for second generation plants, whether they use the one temperature lay out again or whether they adopt the two temperature system. H2S-H2O exchange process. The pilot plant, described in 1958, has been used for a systematic study of corrosion. It was possible to proceed to preliminary specifications of plants, with 2 or 3 H2S - H2O stages exchange for primary enrichment. They final stage beyond a 10 to 20 p.100 D2O concentration being carried out by the distillation of water. Various heat exchange systems have been studied in detail and it was concluded that choices, as for instance the one of optimum division of the cascade, were eventually to be made according to the particular economic conditions of creation at the chosen location of the plant. Depuis 1958 les etudes concernant la production d'eau lourde ont porte sur plusieurs procedes. Chacun a ete examine jusqu'a un stade plus ou moins pousse et finalement les efforts se sont concentres sur les echanges isotopiques Hydrogene Sulfure-Eau, et Ammoniac-Gaz de synthese, apres que l'experience pilote ait montre que la distillation d'hydrogene, bien que technologiquement au point, n'etait pas competitive. Procede d'echange NH3 - gaz de synthese: les recherches se sont poursuivies et ont abouti a la decision de construire une unite de production associee a une synthese d'ammoniac. Le procede est essentiellement dependant de la source de gaz de synthese; on a en effet ecarte, pour des raisons economiques, la mise en oeuvre d'un echange H2O/H2, qui pouvait le rendre Independant. Parmi les differents schemas possibles de mise en oeuvre du procede, le choix s'est porte sur le monotherme qui, au prix de quelques problemes technologiques, offrait l'avantage de realiser un grand enrichissement avec un nombre reduit de moyens contacts. Ceux-ci sont actuellement au point, apres des essais pilote a grande echelle. L'experience industrielle originale qui va etre mise en oeuvre permettra de reunir des enseignements fructueux pour des usines de deuxiemes generations, qu'elles reprennent le schema monotherme ou qu'elles adoptent le schema bitherme. Procede d'echange H2S - H2O Les installations pilote, decrites en 1958, ont permis une etude systematique de la corrosion. On a pu passer a la definition d'avant-projets d'usines independantes, avec les variantes 2 et 3 etages en enrichissement primaire H2S - H2O, la finition etant confiee a la distillation d'eau, au-dela de la teneur de 10 a 20 p.100 en D2O. Differents schemas d'echange de chaleur ont ete examines en detail et on a pu en conclure que le choix, comme celui du decoupage de la cascade, etait finalement fonction des conditions economiques du lieu d'implantation.
