Gravitational effect at neutron diffraction by a bent quartz monocrystal

  • 1. AN SSSR, Leningrad. Inst. Yadernoj Fiziki

Description

The effect of the gravitational field of the Earth on the diffraction of thermal neutrons by an elastically bend quartz single crystal is observed experimentally and described theoretically. The essence of the effect is that the contrast of the pendulum pattern drops more rapidly with bending of the crystal in a position where the effective force due to gravitation adds to the elastic Kato force
