Fast reactor safety and reliability analysis

  • 1. Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam (India)

Description

Fast Breeders make use of fast neutrons (mean neutron energy ∼200 MeV) to cause fission. This fundamental difference results in a (Fast) reactor with entirely different makeup, from neutronic characteristics to coolant, structure, size etc. While fast reactors permit breeding of fissile material and better utilization of uranium i.e. 60 to 80 times more uranium and thorium could be utilized for generating electricity than possible with thermal reactors, it brings along several challenges for safe and economical operation. The initial fears about their safety have turned out to be imaginary and it is demonstrated by operating experience that fast reactors have very good safety features
