Violation of scaling in inclusive production of charmed mesons

Description
The violation of scaling in the function for fragmentation of the charmed c quark into the D meson in the reaction e+e-→D*+X at (s)/sup 1/2/ = 29 GeV is calculated in the framework of the leading logarithmic approximation of QCD. Besides direct production of charm, consideration is given to production of ''beauty'' B mesons with subsequent decays into the D meson. It is shown that for z> or approx. =0.6 the variation of the c-quark fragmentation function is due mainly to the violation of scaling, but that for z< or approx. =0.6 the effect is ''shadowed'' by a substantial contribution from B-meson production
