Description

Groundwater potential evaluation involving lineament and static water level analysis and geo-electrical investigation, was carried out in the basement complex area of Akure Metropolis. The area show high lineament frequencies on outcropping or near - surface basement complex areas underlain by granites and genesis and low frequencies on outcropping or near - surface basement complex areas to 22.0 m with isolated closures diagnostic of the discontinuous nature of the basement aquifers. The flow directions combine to create two main groundwater collecting (converging) zones. Four geologic layers comprising the topsoil, weathered layer, fractured basement and fresh basement were delineated form the study area. The layer resistivity values and thicknesses for the upper three layers are 14 - 7920 ohm - m, 6 - 659 ohm - m, 20 - 1406 ohm - m and 0.7 - 2.7 m, 1.7 - 74 m and 3.0 - 50.4 respectively. The fresh basement is generally infinitely resistive. Five aquifer types were identified from the area. Based on characteristic hydrological and geo-electrical parameters, the study are (Akure metropolis) has been delineated into low, medium and high groundwater potential zones
