Description
The absolute γ-ray intensity distribution for Esub(γ)>3.5 MeV has been measured for the 197Au(p,γ)198Hg reaction at Esub(p)=4.0 MeV. A γ-ray production cross section for Esub(γ)>3.5 MeV of 150+-39 nb was obtained corresponding to a total primary (p,γ) cross section of 96+-25 nb. The γ-ray intensity distribution was used to deduce the E1 strength function for 198Hg which is compared with available strength function information in neighbouring nuclei and with theoretical calculations.
