Preparation and certification of plutonium standards
Description
The Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique has prepared plutonium metal reference samples of guaranteed mass, ranging from 300 to 900 mg, and plutonium content (99.977%). Purification then fragmentization into beads were performed by electrorefining in fused salt baths. The high-precision weighings in a glove box required special equipment and extemely careful handling to achieve a +- 42 μg dubiousness on the mass determination of each sample. Packaging in glass ampoules was carried out under secondary vacuum. Many of the residual impurities were detected by spark mass spectrometry while carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen and americium were determined by specific methods. The discovery of an americium segregation necessitated a γ spectrometric sorting to eliminate samples containing abnormal amounts of the element. The plutonium content was determined from the results of direct analyses carried out in five laboratories by five different methods. An extensive statistical treatment guarantees the plutonium mass in each sample with a maximum dubiousness of +- 0.052 % at the probability level 0.95. Le Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique a realise des echantillons de reference de plutonium metallique dont la masse, comprise entre 300 et 900 mg, et la teneur en plutonium (99,977%) sont garanties. La purification puis la fragmentation en billes ont ete faites par electroraffinage en bains de sels fondus. Les pesees de haute precision en boite a gants ont exige une installation appropriee et de grandes precautions operatoires pour arriver a determiner la masse de chaque echantillon avec une incertitude de +- 42 μg. Le conditionnement en ampoule de verre a ete fait sous vide secondaire. Une grande partie des impuretes residuelles a ete recherchee par spectrometrie de masse a etincelles; le carbone, l'azote, l'hydrogene, l'oxygene et l'americium ont ete doses par des methodes specifiques. La decouverte d'une segregation de l'americium a conduit a trier les echantillons par spectrometrie γ pour eliminer ceux qui avaient une teneur anormale en americium. La teneur en plutonium a ete determinee a partir des resultats des dosages directs effectues dans cinq laboratoires au moyen de cinq methodes differentes. Une exploitation statistique poussee permet de garantir la masse de plutonium contenue dans chaque echantillon avec une incertitude maximale de +- 0,052 % au niveau de probabilite 0,95.
