Development of spent fuel transport system and first shipment in China
Description
With the generation of spent fuel from nuclear power plants (NPPs) continuously increased, a national policy of a CLOSED NUCLEAR FUEL CYCLE has been determined. To match this policy and meet the requirements of NPP safe operation, an integrated spent fuel transport system has been established with a long distance of road transport by 2003, Two NAC-STC Dual-Purpose Casks were used. To date, 338 PWR assemblies have been shipped from Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant located in Guangdong Province to Lanzhou Nuclear Fuel Complex (LNFC) located in Ganshu Province, first shipment of spent fuel from Qinshan NPP is expected in 2009 with other casks under procurement. A brief introduction about the system and cask operation will be given in this paper. (author)
