Description

This report describes the algorithm of Gear recognized as the most powerful for the resolution of stiff equations. The algorithm is developed and explained in a detailed way. Some drawbacks of the algorithm are signaled. So we hope this report will be useful for users confronted with stiff equations which arise in many physical fields. (author)

Abstract (French)

Ce rapport decrit la methode de Gear qui est consideree comme l'une des methodes les plus puissantes pour la resolution des systemes d'equations differentielles a constantes de temps tres differentes. Nous decrivons cet algorithme en detail, essayant de clarifier au maximum les problemes poses dans la resolution de tels systemes. Quelques inconvenients de cet algorithme sont soulignes. Nous esperons ainsi que ce rapport sera un outil utile pour l'utilisateur confronte a des problemes de resolution des equations differentielles a constantes de temps tres differentes, problemes qui concernent differents domaines de la Physique.
