Description
Power demands expected for space resource utilization are examined with particular reference to lunar, Martian, and asteroid resources. It is shown that nuclear power can play a significant role in both propulsion and material processing in space. Nuclear electric freight vehicles can significantly improve the economy of asteroidal ore recovery but are not practical for Martian resource utilization. Several methods of producing lunar propellents are described in detail, including lunar hydrogen and oxygen production schemes. Tradeoffs between nuclear and solar power systems for materials processing are examined. 34 references
