Description

The stringy cosmic strings of Greene, Shapere, Vafa and Yau are deeply related to 4D N=2 gauge theories. In particular, their results are relevant for these theories too. The gauge language suggests a multi-dimensional generalization of these classical solutions of the string equations. They correspond to abelian varieties whose moduli are functions of the non-compact 'space-time' coordinates. Remarkably, only algebraic tori can be obtained this way. In all cases, the 2d σ-model metrics are hyperKaehler, and hence we have exact superconformal invariance. (orig.)
