The physics of emission computed tomography: SPECT and PET
Description
An overview is presented of the basic principles of Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography and Positron Emission Tomography. The physical and practical limitations of the two techniques are discussed together with the most recent development of the detectors. PET imaging has been performed for many years in a few selected research centers and has allowed the in vivo investigation of the physiology and of the metabolic functions of several organs, in particular the brain and the heart. Clinical applications of PET are still in their early stage, but the number of diagnostic procedures is increasing. However, because of their complexity and their cost PET machines will probably remain confined to the major medical centers
