Study of solutions of carborane-containing polyamide

Solutions of poly(p,p'-diphenylenecarboranylene) in dimethylformamide, and tetrahydrofuran were examined using light scattering. It was found that in the amide solvents, three parallel processes can occur: promotion of the polyelectrolyte effect, polymer degradation, and gelation. Depending on the conditions (concentration, temperature, storage time, solvent purity), either the decomposition of the structuration of the solution was shown to dominate.
