Projections of organ doses from diagnostic radiology in radiation protection and control

Description

Based on the work of Rosenstein, et al., published in the HEW Publication 76-8031, ''Handbook of Selected Organ Doses for Projections Common in Diagnostic Radiology'', experiments were performed using Picker single-phase, full wave rectified X-ray machines to determine organ doses for various projections. The work is based on measurements under typical operating conditions of two quality-assured ''identical'' X-ray machines, and demonstrates the incorporation of the estimated dose to the ovaries into ''minimum-dose'' quality assurance. The method was extended to estimate organ doses in mammography. It was concluded that the method could be used for quality assurance purposes as well as for the evaluation of genetically significant doses (GSD). (H.K.)
