Stochastic momentum cooling of low energy, 7 MeV proton beam

Description
A 7 MeV proton beam has been RF stacked in the storage ring, TARN, (Test Accumulation Ring for Numatron), with the momentum spread of 1.3% and it has been cooled down to 0.08% with a stochastic method in the cooling time of approximately 300 seconds. The cooling system consists of travelling wave type pickup and kicker, amplifier system of the maximum gain of 125 dB and notch filters. The system bandwidth is 75 MHz from 20 MHz to 95 MHz. The cooling time and the final momentum spread have been measured for various system gains and are compared with the theoretical results which are calculated on the basis of Fokker-Planck equation approach. The stability conditions for the coherent motion in the presence of stochastic feedback system are also investigated
