Pennsylvania's development of private sector initiatives

Private sector radon services have increased dramatically in Pennsylvania over the past two years following the discovery of elevated indoor radon levels. This has been in response to public demand for these services in those areas where the Department of Environmental Resources (DER) Radon Monitoring Program does not offer free radon detection screening and by those who need diagnosis, remedial design and remedial contracting work not provided by the DER. Much of the private sector radon services growth has been aided by continuing state and federal initiatives. Initially, the trickle of firms entering the radon market was welcomed by DER which could provide few alternatives to homeowners outside its service area who were seeking radon testing. However, the plethora of unregulated firms which now exists presents consumer protection concerns that are being addressed in Pennsylvania
