A review of mixed oxide fuels for light water reactors

  • 1. AEA Fuel Services, Windscale (UK)
  • 2. British Nuclear Fuels Ltd., Springfields (UK)

Description

This article examines the possibility of using mixed oxide (MOX) fuels in light water reactors, such as Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs) and Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs), and compares its use with their normal fuel, low enriched uranium dioxide. The level of international commitment to introducing MOX fuels is examined where plutonium will be available. Some of the technical problems are considered which are associated with the introduction of plutonium fuels into existing light water reactors, as are some fabrication problems. (UK)
