Densitometric parameters on MC3 of horses subdued to low physical activity (third metacarpal bone)
Description
The aim of this study was to evaluate bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral apparent density (BMAD) and a coefficient of bone strength (IBS) on the third metacarpal bone of horses subdued to low physical activity and to relate them to weight and age of the animals. Age and weight are related to BMC, BMD and IBS, but not to BMAD. Weight and age can only modify the amount of cortical bone present on the third metacarpal bone, but not its apparent density
Abstract (Italian)
Lo scopo di questo studio consisteva nel valutare il contenuto minerale delle ossa (BMC), la densita' minerale ossea (BMD), la densita' minerale apparente (BMAD) e un coefficiente di resistenza alla compressione assiale dell'osso (IBS) sul terzo osso metacarpale di cavalli sottoposti a un basso livello di attivita' fisica e di mettere in evidenza le relazioni con il peso e l'eta' degli animali. L'eta' e il peso erano correlati a BMC, BMD e IBS, ma non a BMAD. Il peso e l'eta' possono modificare solo la quantita' di tessuto osseo corticale presente nel terzo osso metacarpale, ma non la sua densita' apparenteAdditional details
