Surface erosion of graphite by D+ irradiation

Description
Surface erosion of different types of graphite by 20 keV D2+ ion irradiation has been studied. The surface of isotropic graphite shows deformation in the form of wrinkles, ridges and grooves at a dose of 1.0x1018 D+/cm2 and smooth features at about 4.0x1019 D+/cm2. These changes in surface might be explained by an initial volume change due to stress accumulation and subsequent uniform sputtering erosion. The surface of graphitized paper (PAPYEX) shows a network of uplifting structure afer irradiation to a dose of 4.0x1018 D+/cm2. Glassy carbon displays minimum surface deformation among the four types of carbon materials studied here. Thermal desorption of D2 and CD4 released from graphite irradiated with deuterium ions is independent of the structure of the sample. (orig.)
