Radiation medicine in an assessment of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster

Description
The Chernobyl accident does not have equal in the world. Acute radiation sickness was a clear deterministic radiation effect as a result of the Chernobyl accident. The conclusion that the observed increase of thyroid cancer incidence among persons irradiated at childhood as a result of the Chernobyl accident is of radiogenic nature and practically irrelevant to the effect of directed epidemiological screening of this pathology can be accepted. The first results testify to increase of some types of malignant neoplasms that should be verified. Main registered effects are the neuropsychiatric disorders, endocrine diseases, cardiovascular pathology, diseases of digestive tract and bronco-pulmonary system, immune and haematological disorders. The social-psychological consequences of the Chernobyl disaster are today the priority problem. Controversial conclusions concerning health effects of the Chernobyl accident testify to an acuteness of a situation with definition of radiation effects even now, and the actuality of the prolongation of studies in this area
