Further study of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in 4He films

  • 1. Laboratory for Low Temperature Physics, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Massachusetts 01003

Description

We report measurements of the effective thermal conductance of a 4He film on glass substrates as a function of film thickness and applied thermal power. The experiments were performed on Pyrex substrates of two geometries: the ''bow-tie'' configuration of Maps and Hallock and a rectangular ribbon shape. On the superfluid side of the transition the relation ΔTproportionalQ/sup γ/ is confirmed for both substrates. Geometry-dependent effects in the vicinity of the transition are briefly discussed
