Activity concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides and 239+240Pu in the surface sediments off Kalpakkam coast

Surface Sediment samples collected up to 5 Km distance off 3 sampling stations located along the Kalpakkam coast line were analysed for 238U, 232Th, 40K and 239+240Pu. The sediments composition study was also done. 239+240Pu levels were in the range 0.02 Bq/kg dry to 0.2 Bq/kg dry which were very low compared to global fallout levels. The 238U, 232Th and 40K concentrations were in the range, 4-32 and 6-222, 208-595 Bq/kg dry respectively in the sediments. From the study, elevated concentration of 232Th was observed due to the presence of monazite which contains 9.6% Thorium. The contribution of 239+240Pu discharges from the nuclear facilities of Kalpakkam to the dose to benthic organisms is negligible compared to 238U and 232Th in the surface sediments of Kalpakkam.
