The focus of this monograph is on the manufacture of turbine generators and nuclear steam supply systems for public electric utilities. The content of the paper is as follows. Chapters II to V are largely historical, and consider the evolution of the industry and its markets, and of relations between the industry, utilities and governments, particularly in the 1970s. Chapter VI examines the implications of scenarios of power plant demand in the Western World for capacity utilization and trading patterns. Chapter VII considers the short-term prospects of European, US and Japanese suppliers. Chapter VIII analyses the options available to policy-makers concerned to defend the international competitiveness of European power plant manufacturing in the longer term. Finally, there is a personal view of the future (Chapter IX) followed by an appendix explaining technicalities and a list of further reading. (author)
