Environmental radiation mapping to generate baseline dose rate profile of Mumbai city

  • 1. Radiation Safety Systems Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)
  • 2. Physics Department, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune (India)

Description

The natural background radiation level in the environment varies from place to place due to the change in concentration of radionuclides like 40K and decay products of naturally occurring radioactive series of 238U and 232Th in the earth crust and cosmic radiation. The intensity of cosmic radiation, which varies with altitude, also changes the background radiation. The main objectives of this Environmental Radiation Mapping were: To ascertain the gamma background dose rate along different routes in Mumbai City; To locate the presence of any unusual radiation levels or orphan sources; To check the effectiveness of mobile monitoring and methodology in case of radiological/nuclear emergency
