The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons

The non-proliferation treaty provides the reasons are given behind the conclusion of the Treaty, its content and the role of the IAEA as an international inspection body. Through a safeguards system, the IAEA checks whether the aid which it provides for the peaceful use of nuclear power is not being misused for military purposes. The observance of the Treaty is monitored in three ways: the nuclear country is obligated to send monthly reports to the IAEA on the amount and movement of nuclear materials on its territory; inspection is carried out of nuclear materials in nuclear installations; the most important supervision instruments are physical inventories of nuclear materials
